Fire Birds logo analysis

Following the Brief

The brief required the design of a female Volleyball team called Fire Birds. The ancient Greek creature Phoenix should be part of the whole design concept.

The name

The chosen name Fire Birds is directly related with the figure of Phoenix, which can be simple described as it is: a fire bird. The legend tells about a bird which has a 500 to 1,000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self. The name suits perfectly a female team for its female connotations with birds and to show the strength and power which fire gives to the concept.

The concept

Colours related with fire as red, yellow and orange were used in the design process. Shapes as flames, birds and team players are part as well of the initial ideas. The Phoenix represents the strength of arise again from the lost, the adversities and difficulties. It represents very well the idea of a sport team which has to face a lot of pressure and develop competitive skills.

The Logos

The first approach shows a team player doing the regular first service in a volleyball match. It is surrounded by flames as sign of power. The name Fire Jumpers was one of the first ideas for a male team.

The second approach shows an eagle flying over a volley ball. This time, the flames used are more abstract, represented with sharp shapes. It is more obvious the concept of Phoenix which maybe is stronger than the first one. The name Fire Claws is linked to the bird image.

The final logo represents much better the idea of a female team and it suits the concept more accurate. The female silhouette has a Greek style and can be easily related with a bird for its rounded shapes. The flames are more stylish than the previous logos and the ribbon with the name of the team gives the logo a sense of institution. It is consider that this final concept can be developed more to design the final visual identity for the team.

  1. Three strong ideas here, all which can be developed into a final logo design.

I agree that the first logo design would probably be more suited for a men’s volleyball team as it had more of a masculine feel to it than that of the others. The male in the middle and the wild fire around him probably were not suited for the design brief. The stance that the male was in is great and just by looking at that alone can u tell that it is a logo for a volleyball team.

The second concept was again well thought out and could be applied to a volleyball team as well, either male, or female. The eagle swooping down and catching the volleyball in its claws is a strong idea. It would probably work more effectively if the eagle was replaced with a Phoenix instead, this would hold a stronger link with the theme.

The final design is probably the strongest although there are a little inconsistencies, the female could be developed a little more only because the base of her looks like a mermaid’s tail. Might have been done on purpose but is it relevant? Over all the design is stronger than the rest, the flames are resolved in an artistic way that would be clear blown up or scaled down.

Probably could have experimented with the names a bit more, could have played around with some more words other than fire in front of all the names.

Good use of colours, using red, an obvious choice, and blue which contrasts well next to the red.

All up a strong set of designs, wish mine were as strong as these!!
    Cheers, Simon.

  2. The three concepts in all is very well choosen. There is also a nice mixture of colours, very strong, vivid, live, and powerfull, thus linking its power to the fire bird which is The Phoenix.
By linking the flames or fire to the concepts, you linked perfectly ure mythological character to them.
from concept one, we can see that it is a masculin team, and the " man's " drawing specify the logo very well its belongings. I can see here with further development on this concept would be a very good result as it has a very good combinason of colours. The blue is very vivid and match very well the flames. However the name "Jumpers" doesnt match well the logo. A better name would be better. The first drawing of the first concept is better than the 2nd smaller one of the same concept, because the half orange/blue man is'nt very well attractive.
The second concept is far very well choosen. It is by far my favourite one. The bird match very well the design, spreading its wings, signifying its dominance on a volley-ball which results to the dominance to the discipline. However the bird figure is similar to what Simon told you up, like ressemble much to an eagle rather than a phoenix bird. Further research and trials on this part would be a good idea for a final concept. The name "fire claws" also is well choosen, I like it very much, however I would prefer "smashing flames". Here also, there is a good combinaison of colours. Blue matches very well the orange flames.
Whereas the third logo, I prefered the colour version. here also good combinaison of coulour in the gradiend yellow to orange on the flames and the blue female body shape. However, this logo would fit onmly a female/ feminine team. Woud'nt match a common of regular team, meaning that in a local team for example it would'nt fit to the juniors or to the male/masculin team of the club. However, it fits perfectly for a female/feminine "Professional/Elite" team. And to finish, the name firebirds is well choosen, and the shape of the concept would be a good logo with further development.
Hope those critiques would be usefull for you for your further development on the topic/subject.
    my reguards to you,
    Micah
